Chapter 14

"Megan." Justin's voice seemed to come to her from a great distance, calling from a cool fog.

Her eyes opened slowly to rest on Justin's dark, chiseled features.

"Are you all right?" His fingers were light and gentle as they brushed away a splotch of mud from her upturned nose.

"I think so," she answered weakly, caught in the warm, cider depths of his eyes. They looked worried, she thought distractedly, and dangerous, with that lovely expression of concern embedded deep in the soft, flecked irises. She attempted to rise, but he kept her steady, pressing gently against her shoulder.

"Relax for a moment, love, until your head clears," he urged. Taking her arm between his large hands, he massaged it, feeling for breakage. Then, with a glance at her face he set the limb aside, lifting the other to test it in the same manner. Finding nothing wrong, he kissed her upturned palm then disappeared from her limited view to search for breakage in her half-exposed legs.

Megan lay without complaint. She should be embarrassed, she reasoned, especially since she was accustomed to wearing very little under her gowns. In fact, her legs were bare below her knees, but embarrassment seemed such a worthless emotion when his hands felt like tangible sunlight against the flesh of her calf.

They moved upward, easing past her knee to the femur, then down the opposite leg to her ankle. Warmth followed in the wake of his massage and she felt a twinge of guilty disappointment when the movement ceased.

"You seem unbroken." He appeared before her, searching her face for signs of pain. "Do you feel whole?"

Megan could find no words as she stared at his rugged beauty. There was no hostility there now, no distrust, only a sort of flattering worry—and maybe something more.

She had never been afforded such an opportunity to examine him at close proximity and used her time well now, noting each sculpted feature. There was nothing about him she could fault. Every inch of him seemed to personify masculinity and she stared in open wonder.

"Are you whole, Megan?" he repeated with a scowl.

She said nothing, trying to straighten the facts in her own muddled mind. Was she whole? She searched the solid squareness of his face, looking for the answer there. Could any woman be whole and not wish to touch the masculine beauty of his face?

She reached up hesitantly with one smudged hand, to rest her fingertips on the rough-bristled skin of his cheek.

"Megan?" he said, sounding truly worried by her strange behavior.

"Yes?" She smiled a little, drawing her fingers away. "I'm sorry. I think I can ride."

She attempted to rise, but he scowled her down, pulling her against him with gentle strength and slipping one arm beneath her bent knees. He rose to his feet, barely noticing her weight as he lifted her.

"I—I'm sure I can ride," she stammered, glancing nervously about for her mount.

"I'm sure you can ride too, like a little centaur," Justin said, still scowling his worry as he strode toward Free Winds.
